Mucho gusto, soy Olivia. It is an honor of mine to be part of the Cedar Hill Prep community

On August 1st, 2020, I graduated from the University of Pittsburgh with a BA in Spanish Language and Literature, a minor in Portuguese Language and Literature, and a Certificate in Latin American Studies. Rather than focus on Spain and European Studies as many other Spanish students and teachers normally do, I found studying the Latin American community to be helpful for the future of this country considering the growing Latino presence in the United States. Moreover, I am a first-generation child of a Latino household and wanted to learn as much as possible about my own community; during my studies of Spanish prior to and during college, there was a lack of instruction on Latin America.

My experience with Latin American education, through the University of Pittsburgh, includes being an Undergraduate Teacher’s Assistant for a Modern Art and Politics of Latin America course and teaching under an internship through the Center for Latin American Studies (CLAS).

During my internship with CLAS, it was my responsibility to create lesson plans for each grade section K-12 and carry the lessons out. My lessons focused on Cuba and Mexico. Furthermore, my experience teaching ranges from suburban public schools to urban charter schools to prep schools such as this one, all ages and races included.

Outside of the classroom, I was also involved in extra-curriculars related to my studies. Some include, but are not limited to, research on the level of political satisfaction of college students/graduates in Brazil (funded by CLAS), volunteer work as a medical translator, and active membership in the Latinx Student Association.

It has always been a dream of mine to be a teacher, and I am so excited to begin my teaching career with you all. I look forward to this school year!
