3RD GRADE TEACHER / Language Arts and Social Studies

Shavionne Samuel

I am so excited to join the Cedar Hill Prep Community School as a 3rd grade teacher of Language Arts and Social Studies. Prior to teaching at Cedar Hill Prep, I taught as a 3rd and 4th-grade English Language Arts teacher for Maryland Public Schools. As a child, I knew that teaching was my passion; out of all the careers that I could have chosen to embark on I believe that this was my purpose. As a proud alumni of Bennett College for Women, I had the privilege to study and work with students who came from various cultural and ethnic backgrounds. The experiences that I encountered with this particular group of students were the building blocks to molding me into the educator that I am today.

My philosophy of teaching is to cultivate a love for lifelong learning. I believe that the first function of education is to nurture identity, which lays the foundation for what students will be able to do and what they must learn. A classroom has students from different viewpoints, interests, and backgrounds, and experiences. They learn best in an environment where they feel secure, listened to, and respected. All students can learn when they are accepted for who and where they are in their educational journey. I believe teaching is a mission with the objective of influencing the direction of young minds, enabling them to develop lifelong learning skills, and critical thinking skills, and to set higher goals for success.
