21st Century Classroom Resources

What makes a good 21st Century Classroom? In order to prepare students for success in the world beyond the classroom, that world needs to make an appearance in the classroom. Private schools are able to allow for such real-world windows and applications in ways that public schools simply cannot due to budget concerns, curriculum requirements, and classroom size.

At Cedar Hill Prep, all classrooms are equipped with three laptop computers, and the school also has a “laptop cart” with over a dozen more laptops that can be brought into any classroom when needed.

Because of the small number of students in each class, this makes for an effective learning situation in which students will all have access to the laptops during class time in order to bolster their learning skills.

21st Century Classroom | Dual Education: Skills And Knowledge

While students are acquiring classroom-based knowledge, they are simultaneously learning their way around the technology. How do you perform an effective internet search? What constitutes “good” online sources? How can you responsibly manage technology while still being engaged in the classroom experience? These skills, skills which will directly apply to life outside of the classroom, are vital 21st century survival skills and not ones that a public school tends to have the resources to teach.

An advanced multimedia room allows students one-on-one access to technology. From first through fourth grades, an integrated computer curriculum teaches students the ins and outs of navigating digital technologies.

Introducing students to computer usage at an early age will allow them time to acclimate to this important tool, and engages the curiosity associated with independent learning. We begin with basic knowledge of computer parts, mouse navigation skills, and keyboard navigation skills before progressing to the more advanced usage of work processing applications, data processing, spreadsheet creation, and even graphic organization charts.

Students who understand these skills have a distinct advantage over their peers as they progress into 21st century life and the multitude of projects both personal and professional that it brings with it.

21st Century Classroom | STEM In The Classroom

In addition to computer resources, students at Cedar Hill Prep also have access to a multitude of research equipment for their various STEM projects. At Cedar Hill Prep, the science fair is an all-day event (and a highlight of our year). For this important keystone learning experience, all student work is done in school with no parent involvement.

This means that students are allowed and encouraged to take full responsibility for their projects as they learn to manage resources and time, collaborate their efforts, and present their findings in a scientific and professional way.

Because this private school is at liberty to offer the resources necessary to create such learning opportunities, students are able to flourish into them. Private school’s plethora of available resources geared towards increased opportunities for student learning allows students to thrive in an atmosphere of creative thinking and independence. The 21st century is knocking; and private school is prepared to answer.
