Middle School Poetry Day

As the month of April came to a close, May rolled in on a glorious spring day…and with it Poetry Day.  Students in the Middle School practiced for a month to prepare for our poetry celebration.

Students from grades 5 to 8 gathered in classrooms to share their chosen poems. A brief poet bio was followed by individual students presenting their poems.  Shared poems included works by: Shel Silverstein, Maya Angelou, Emily Dickinson, Robert Louis Stevenson, and Glenis Redmond, a favorite poet who visits Cedar Hill Prep through the poet in residency program. Upon arriving for Poetry Day, parents were given “pocket poems.” When the students had completed their presentations, the parents then shared their pocket poems with the group.

The grand finale was a performance art piece by CHP’s fifth grade. This ballad was chosen to demonstrate the connection between Language Arts and Social Studies. All students, teachers, and parents gathered in the gym and watched the presentation of “The Midnight Ride of Paul Revere,” by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. A special thanks to Dr. Wiginton for his vision, direction, and inspiration.
